Still in Ainsdale,do you remember Alf with the one leg? Alf repaired bikes, around the back of the shops, where
Acari's is,if my memory is right.

My goodness Nell, is Arcari's still in the back street behind the shops?

Acari's is across the road from the Railway pub,the corner shop.Alf repaired bikes behind the shops I seem to
recall an entrance behind the row of shops, where Acari's is one of those shops Nick.

I remember a Sam Arcari who up to about 1950 sold home made ice cream from a three wheeler push bike with a dry-ice box fitted on the front. It wasn't as good as Rossi's.

I think I may have mentioned this on one of the Southport sites before so apologies for the repetition. In the late 40's early 50's the Arcari family lived in Limont Rd Ainsdale. The father ( Eric, I think) had a bookies office in the alley way behind the shops opposite the Railway pub. I went to St John's primary school with one of his sons Peter Arcari. At that time the row of shops opposite the pub included a butchers, a greengrocers and, a newsagents which was run by a Mr and Mrs Andrews. Their son Bernard also went to St Johns school.
I'll always remember the newsagents because my mum used to send me there regularly to get her a packet of 10 Players cigarettes and, to ask to put them on the paper bill. Happy days?? :) :)

Vivian Arcari who runs the shop I think now,her father if I remember right was Laurie. There is a butchers shop
still and John Brough has had it for some years now "Broughs".John has other butchers shops, in Birkdale,Formby,Kew and Ormskirk. The newsagent is still there,Mr Howarth run it when I was young "Howarths".My late Dad worked at Ainsdale station for many years, before having a stroke at work.He was 55 and later on wanted to get back to the work he loved, sadly he was not fit enough. My Mum would send me with his Tea when he was working the evening, the two plates together wrapped in newpaper,to keep the meal warm. The Robinson family ran the Railway pub for years, now it it a bit rough, nothing liked it used to be,
when Robinsons ran it.

I think my sister, Hilary, went to St Johns, probably started there around 1953 or 1954 when we moved to Ainsdale.

Last time that we visited Ainsdale, probably around six or seven years ago, the whole village seemed to be quite prosperous. Similar communities in other parts of the world have not done too well with competition from supermarkets and shopping centres. I think Birkdale Village was also doing OK but they have different kinds of shops.

I think Arcaris is the only veg shop now in the village, there were three I think at one time. There is Somerfield
supermarket and it is not one of the cheapest,as like Morrisons in Southport.Acaris I think has the better quality with their veg and regular customers who prefer them. It's great to know that this little shop is still running, remembering it as a young girl.Acaris let me have cauliflower leaves when I kept rabbits.....38 years
ago!
